History of Bingo
| The origins of bingo date as far back as
1530 to Italy where an Italian lottery known as "Lo Giuoco
del Lotto d'Italia", however many credit a USA salesman by
the name of Edwin Lowe for making the game popular. While traveling in Georgia around 1929, Lowe visited a carnival which had a tent set up playing the game. He stood and watched a man pulling wooden disks from a box calling out numbers, and a huge crowd of people staring at cards. As he watched, he noticed as people would find the number called by the man they would place a bean on the card over that particular number. Then when a line was created with the beans they yelled out "Beano" and would receive a prize. Lowe returned home to New York, bought some beans and cardboard and invited friends over to play the game. During one game a guest called out "Bingo" rather than "Beano", and Bingo was born. Lowe then hired a math professor to help him with different bingo card combinations, and by 1934 bingo was being played throughout the country. Even today Bingo holds a huge part to American life, and just about everyone in the US has either played Bingo or knows someone who has. It acts as a huge fundraiser for churches and fire departments, and now has migrated to the Internet. Today you can play the Bingo game of choice at any time of the day from the comfort of home.
